Trojans in 10th after 2nd day at district tournament
SIOUX CITY - The NIACC men's golf team sits in 10th place after the second day Monday at the NJCAA North Central District Championship at the Whispering Creek Golf Course.
NIACC has a two-day total of 310-317 - 627. Kirkwood leads the district tournament heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes with a 289-292 - 581.
Northeast CC is in second with rounds of 295-287 - 582 and Southeast CC is in third (295-296 - 591).
The top three teams qualify for the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Plymouth, Ind. on May 20-23. The top three individuals not on qualifying teams and in the top 17 qualify for the national tournament.
"It was not the day we needed as a team (Monday) o make a move toward the top three," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "It's disappointing to come in iwth high expectations as a team and not perform like we think we can."
After the first two rounds, the Trojans are led by sophomore Bennett Berger, who is in a tie for 24th place with rounds of 76-76 - 152. Freshman Garrett Ham is in a tie for 29th place with rounds of 78-76 - 154.
"Bennett Berger and Garret Ham still have a fighting chance and they know what they have to do and need some help," Frenz said. "But the third day of the tournament, we will be the hunters and hopefully put a great score out there to make it difficult for other to ignore."
Also for the Trojans, freshman Ian Roske shot 78-81 - 159, freshman Ashtin Willms shot 78-85 - 163 and Drew DeGabriele, who did not play Sunday, shot 84.
