DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the 13th straight season, the NIACC women's golf team will be represented at the national tournament.
Freshman Jordyn Barragy will tee it up for the Lady Trojans at the NJCAA Division I national tournament Monday through Thursday at the LPGA International Golf Course.
"This is a really exciting opportunity for Jordyn to be able to compete at the national tournament in her freshmen year," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "She's been working hard on her game the past two weeks to get ready for the LPGA International Hills Course."
Barragy earned the final qualifying spot for the national tournament by winning a two-hole playoff over Southwestern's Ashton Carter at the NJCAA Region XI tournament on April 27 in Ankeny. Barragy sunk a 20-foot par putt from off the green on hole No. 9 at Otter Creek Golf Course on a cold and rainy day.
The final round at the regional tournament was trimmed to nine holes due to inclement weather.
Barragy shot a 51 in the final round and finished with a 91-86-88-51 - 316 to become the 22nd women's golfer in the Frenz era to qualify for the national tournament.
The LPGA International course is 6,984 yards. By comparison, Otter Creek is 6,141 from the women's tees.
"Her driver needs to be one of her favorite weapons this week as her distance off the tee is going to be critical to her success," Frenz said. "This course plays longer because the ball doesn't roll out as much as it does back home.
'I think this course will fit her game pretty well."
Barragy has shown consistent improvement throughout her freshman spring season. Barragy's first two rounds of the spring were 104 and 102 and she had two rounds in the 80s at the regional tournament.
"It's been fun to watch her progression as a player this year as her confidence has grown with every tournament," Frenz said. "Our hope is to finish in the upper half of the tournament field which should be around 125 golfers.
"That would be an excellent finish. I know she's looking forward to the challenge send representing herself and NIACC with a quality effort."
