MASON CITY - The NIACC softball team dropped a pair of ICCAC contests to No. 8 Kirkwood on Monday on the NIACC campus.
Kirkwood (23-8 overall, 12-4 in the ICCAC) won the first game 1-0 in nine innings and took the second game 10-2 in six innings.
In the first game, the Eagles pushed across a single run in their half of the ninth inning on a two-out infield single by Peggy Klingler. The Eagles' Kori Wedeking struck out the side in the bottom half of the ninth inning to finish off the complete-game shutout.
Wedeking (14-2) allowed four hits with 18 strikeouts and two walks. NIACC's Bri Notermann collected two of the four hits, including a double in the second inning.
NIACC's other two hits were singles by Anna Lensing and Hailey Worman.
NIACC's best chance to score was in the seventh inning when it loaded the bases with nobody out. Wedeking worked out of the jam with an infield pop out and two strikeouts.
NIACC's Laken Lienhard (3-5) was the tough-luck loser allowing three hits with 11 strikeouts, four walks and one hit by pitch. Lienhard took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a one-out infield single to Olivia Richards.
It was the first time since March 21, 2019 that the Lady Trojans played in a 1-0 contest when Indian Hills nipped the Lady Trojans 1-0 in seven innings in the first-game of a doubleheader.
In the second game, Kirkwood scored in five of his six at-bats, including three runs each in the first and sixth innings.
NIACC scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth inning, Sydni Coleman plated Riley Nelson with a single.
In the fifth inning, Kayla Noelker drove in Worman with a ground out to first.
