NIACC stops Iowa Lakes in tourney opener
CEDAR RAPIDS - The NIACC softball team topped Iowa Lakes 8-0 in five innings in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XI-B tournament Friday afternoon on the Kirkwood campus.
NIACC received a no-hit, pitching performance from freshman Kristen Peka, who struck out seven and walked one. It was Peka's fifth no-hitter this season.
The Lady Trojans scored four runs in the third inning and plated four more in the fourth frame.
In the fourth inning, Morgan Kelley hit a solo home run and Kaci Sherwood hit a two-run home run.
Sherwood, who is the school's career home run queen, has 23 career home runs and 14 home runs this season. Kelley now has seven home runs this season.
NIACC plays Kirkwood in the championship round of the regional tournament at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the NIACC/Kirkwood game advances to the regional championship.
