NIACC's DeLong places second at Simpson Storm Spring Classic
INDIANOLA - NIACC freshman Meghan DeLong placed second at the Simpson College Storm Spring Classic Wednesday at the Indianola Country Club.
DeLong, who is from Clear Lake, shot an 80 to earn her second-place finish. Buena Vista's Brooke Stellmaker was the individual medalist with a round of 77.
NIACC placed fourth in the team standings with a 361. Buena Vista was the team champion with a team score of 331 and Loras College was second with a 340.
"It was the best weather day of the year so far," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "until the wind kicked up about midway through the round (Wednesday).
"We started on the difficult front nine that has a lot of 'target golf' shot you need to hit over a meandering creek and we didn't handle that real well as a team overall."
Frenz said DeLong had some trouble on holes No. 11 and No. 13.
"She did a fantastic job of working hard to keep control of her emotions and played the final six holes even par," Frenz said.
Also for the Trojans, freshman Kenedee Frayne shot a career-best 92, freshman Danielle Randick shot 94, freshman Addy Boell shot 95 and freshman Ashlyn Berven shot 96.
Playing as an individual, NIACC freshman Kaiya Holten shot a career-best 98.
NIACC returns to action Tuesday at the NIACC Invitational at the Legacy Golf Course at the 19 in Mason City.
"We have one more opportunity to compete in tournament play before the regional tournament," Frenz said, "and we're looking forward to a solid week of practice (weather permitting) to get ready for that."
