Trojans sit in 9th place after day 2 at nationals
BOONE - The NIACC women's golf team is in ninth place Wednesday after the second round at the NJCAA Division II national tournament at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course.
The Trojans shot a 355 on Wednesday after opening the tournament with a season low 336 on Tuesday. The Trojans have a two-day total of 336-355 - 691.
"It was a tough day for the Trojans (Wednesday) as we started slow out of the gate and never got much traction throughout the round," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "They were all pretty frustrated coming off the front nine, but I loved their effort on the back nine to hang in there and keep us in the hunt for a top five finish."
Shelton State CC is the two-day leader with rounds of 311-304 - 615. Mesa CC is in second at 317-317 - 634 and Iowa Central is in third at 327-330 - 657.
Freshman Meghan DeLong leads the Trojans with rounds of 79-82 - 161, which is tied for 17th in the individual medalist competition. Iowa Central's Ivanna Becerra-Diaz is the two-day leader at 74-73 - 147.
Snead State's Ashley Nelson, Shelton State's Peyton Maraman and Shelton State's Katie Hallmark are tied for second. Nelson has shot 73-78 - 151, Maraman has shot 76-75 - 151 and Hallmark has shot 76-75 - 151.
Also for the Trojans, sophomore Paige Danger is in a tie for 33rd place with rounds of 84-86 - 170. Freshman Ashlyn Berven is in a tie for 45th place at 84-93 - 177, freshman Kenedee Frayne is in a tie for 64th place at 89-100 - 189 and freshman Addy Boell is in a tie for 64th place at 95-94 - 189.
"They played so well (Tuesday) that (Wednesday) was a let down," Frenz said, "but we're still looking forward to improving (Thursday) and Friday. It sounds like the weather might become a bigger part of the story with winds starting to kick up.
"So if we play well in that, you can make up a lot of ground quickly. The effort and attitudes are good so I can't complain about that."
Tee times for the Trojans on Thursday are as follows: Frayne (8 a.m.); Boell (8:10 a.m.), Berven (8:20 a.m.), Danger (8:30 a.m.); DeLong (8:40 a.m.).
