NIACC baseball notes
The NIACC baseball team swept an ICCAC doubleheader against Southwestern on Saturday at Roosevelt Field. The Trojans won the first game 11-0 in five innings and won the second game 10-4.
NIACC (16-10 overall, 6-5 in the ICCAC) is 4-0 this season at Roosevelt Field. The Trojans also swept Kirkwood (13-2 and 20-12) in an ICCAC twinbill on March 30.
The Trojans hit six home runs (2 in the opener and 4 in the second game) in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Southwestern. Ike Mezzenga homered in both games giving him seven home runs this season and eight for his career.
NIACC's Cayden Nicoletto hit a home run in the first game.
In the second game, the Trojans received home runs from Mezzenga, Cody Kelly, Lincoln Berry and Noah Juliar.
Kelly leads the Trojans with 11 home runs, which is tied for third in NJCAA Division II.
Nicoletto has three home runs this season. Berry and Juliar both hit their first home runs of the season.
NIACC has 41 home runs on the season, which is tied for seventh in NJCAA Division II.
The Trojans have 17 home runs in their four home games at Roosevelt Field this season. On March 30, they hit five home runs in the first game against Kirkwood and six in the second game.
On Saturday, the Trojans hit two home runs in the first game against Southwestern and hit four home runs in the second game.
Nicoletto leads the Trojans with 11 doubles, which is tied for third in the ICCAC.
Kelly is hitting .400 (5th in ICCAC) with 29 RBIs (11th in ICCAC), 32 runs scored (13th in ICCAC) and 18 walks (tied for 12th in ICCAC).
In Saturday's sweep of Southwestern, NIACC's Jacob Mrosko tossed a complete-game 1-hitter in the 11-0 five-inning win in the opener. Mrosko struck out nine and walked one and only allowed a two-out double in the fifth inning.
Mrosko has 46 strikeouts this season, which ranks sixth in the ICCAC.
In the second game, NIACC's Thomas Gross allowed two runs on one hit with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
Gross is now one of 10 pitchers in NIACC history with at least 100 strikeouts. Gross ranks seventh on the school's career strikeout list with 109 career strikeouts.
Brandon Williamson is the school's career strikeout leader with 151. Williamson, who played for the Trojans in 2017-18, is in the Cincinnati Reds' minor league system (Double A Chattanooga Lookouts).
NIACC hosts Southwestern in a doubleheader Sunday at Roosevelt Field. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
