MASON CITY - The NIACC baseball team swept No. 9 (NJCAA Division I) Iowa Western Monday afternoon at Roosevelt Field.
NIACC won the first game 9-2 in the scheduled ICCAC contest and won the 3-game league series 2-1. The Trojans completed the Monday sweep with a 7-4 win in the second game.
NIACC, which has won 12 of its last 14 games, improved its overall record to 30-16 and 17-11 in the ICCAC.
It is the first time in recent memory that the Trojans have won a series against Iowa Western. The two teams split four-game series' in 2017 and 2018.
In the first game, Brandt Thompson (5-0) gained the win for the Trojans on the mound. Thompson struck out seven and walked five while allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work.
Ben Rosin pitched the final three innings for the Trojans allowing no runs on no hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
NIACC received home runs from Cody Kelly, Ike Mezzenga and Cayden Nicoletto. The Trojans also had four doubles (two from Bennett McCollow, one from Logan Milene and one from Nicoletto).
In the second game, Hunter Day (4-1) gained the win for the Trojans. Day allowed three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work.
Mezzenga was 3 for 3, including two home runs, with four RBIs. Nicoletto also homered for the Trojans.
NIACC's Kade Peloquin was 3 for 3, including two bunt singles.
NIACC returns to action Tuesday at home in a single ICCAC contest against No. 17 (NJCAA Division II) Iowa Central. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
