LAKE CITY, Minn. - NIACC's Sam Steinwand shot a 71 Tuesday to win the Rochester Community and Technical College Fall Invitational at The Jewel, his second individual title in NIACC's last two tournaments.
"Sam was great (Tuesday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "He's not necessarily doing anything flashy, but just making good decisions and hitting good shots.
"Actually, his putting was a little off (Tuesday) or he could have been lower. The Jewel is a really good test of skills and he proved he had what it took to win by a stroke."
Steinwand, who also won the Iowa Lakes Invitational last weekend, has a six-round fall average of 72.3.
NIACC, which finished fifth, had scoring rounds from Zach Nicholson (84), Joe Nordquist (85), Chris Staudt (88) and Brandon Nordman (96).
NIACC's junior varsity, led by Joesph Lensing's round of 74, finished fourth.
"Our second team actually played better than our first team with Joseph Lensing leading the way," Frenz said. "That was a nice bounce back for Joseph after a little bit of a struggle at Okoboji over the weekend.
"He just need to keep positive thoughts rolling through his head when things get a little sideways."
NIACC returns to action Oct. 4 at the Waldorf College Invitational.
"We'll go back to practice, hopefully with a purpose after this showing and get ready for the Waldorf Invite," Frenz said.
