NIACC falls to Cape Fear, 116-105
HARRISON, Ark. - The NIACC women's basketball team dropped a 116-105 decision to Cape Fear College on Wednesday in the NJCAA Division II quarterfinals on the North Arkansas College campus.
Seventh-seeded Cape Fear led 63-48 at the half and held on for the 11-point victory. NIACC outscored the Sea Devils 57-53 in the second half but saw its 16-game winning streak come to an end.
Ny Langley led the Sea Devils with 31 points and Ayonna Cotton was next in line with 22 points.
NIACC will play Pima CC at 3 p.m. Thursday in the consolation round. If the Lady Trojans win on Thursday, they will play for fifth-place on Saturday.
Cape Fear plays third-seeded Kansas City (Kan.) in Friday's semifinals.
The 221 total combined points in Wednesday's contest set a single-game record for most points scored in a NJCAA Division II national tournament game. The previous record was 215 combined points in 2013 when Owens CC beat Monroe College 113-102.
The 116 points by Cape Fear also set a single-game record at the national tournament. The previous high-water mark was 113 by Illinois Central against Kalamazoo Valley in 2002.
The 105 points by NIACC was the most ever by a NIACC women's team at the national tournament. The old mark was in 1975 when the Lady Trojans topped Prince George's CC out of Maryland 102-41 in the opening round of the national tournament.
Freshman Jada Buford led the Lady Trojans with 34 points against Cape Fear. The Lady Trojans also received 21 points and 12 rebounds from Autam Mendez.
Also for the Lady Trojans, Kelcie Hale scored 16 points, Mandy Willems scored 13 points, Tahya Campbell scored 10 points and Alexa Loftus scored nine points.
