Trojans place 4th at Battle For The Helmet
MASON CITY - The NIACC men's wrestling team placed fourth Saturday at the Battle For The Helmet in the NIACC recreation center.
The Trojans placed fourth with 87.5 points. Southeast CC was the team champion with 133 points and Harper College was second with 116 points.
NIACC's Nicky Bernard placed second at 184 pounds and Mustafa Hadi was second at 197 pounds.
In the 184-pound title match, Southeast CC's Jack Doughty pinned Bernard in 4 minuts, 41 seconds.
Bernard (10-4) moved to the finals with a 11-3 major decision over Harper College's Gabe Inorio and a 7-3 win over Iowa Western's Cal Wells.
In the 197-pound title match, Southeast CC's Grant Schwerdtfeger topped Hadi 5-1.
Hadi, who was wrestling for the first time this season, advanced to the finals with a 5-1 win over Iowa Western's Kolby Scott and a 13-2 major decision over NIACC's Corbin Hill.
Also for the Trojans Saturday, Chris Williams placed third at 141 pounds, Cory Scanlan was third at 157 pounds, Logan Straub was third at 165 pounds and Marco Guzman was third at 197 pounds.
NIACC's Hill was fourth at 197 pounds and Grant Henderson was fourth at 285 pounds.
The Trojans' Isaiah Maldonado (133), Rory Prazak (165), Gregorio Herrera (174) and Wyatt Hanna (285) all placed fifth.
NIACC returns to action Jan. 14 in a dual meet at Iowa Western. Match time in Council Bluffs is slated for 7 p.m.
