3 Trojans place 3rd at district tournament
MASON CITY - Three NIACC men's wrestlers placed third Sunday at the NJCAA North Central District Tournament in the NIACC recreation center.
NIACC, which placed fourth with 103.5 points, received third-place finishes from Cory Scanlan (157), Logan Straub (165) and Nicky Bernard (184). The Trojans also placed fourth at the 2025 district tournament with the same point total of 103.5.
Indian Hills was the team champion with 179 points and Iowa Central was second with 175 points.
At 157 pounds, Scanlan (16-8) took an 8-0 major decision from Iowa Western's Braxton Peacher in the third-place match.
Scanlan pinned Ellsworth's Nicholas Fischer in 2:27 in the quarterfinals.
Scanlan dropped a 10-2 major decision to Iowa Central's Chancery Deane in the semifinals. Scanlan then advanced to the third-place match with a 11-1 major decision victory over Iowa Lakes' Vincent Costabilo.
At 165 pounds, Straub (8-12) won by injury default over Iowa Western's Andrew Crowther in one minute, 56 seconds in the third-place match.
Straub opened his district tournament iwth a 2:52 fall over Southeastern's Lyblie Christofferson. Indian Hills' Mohamed Tarek topped Scanlan by technical fall (19-3) in the semifinals.
Straub moved to the third-place match with a pin in 5:42 over Iowa Lake's Larry Norrington.
At 184 pounds, Bernard (15-7) topped Iowa Western's Cal Wells 4-2 in the third-place match.
Wells pinned Bernard in 2:53 in quarterfinal round match.
Bernard took a 13-4 major decision from Iowa Lakes' Jacob Range to move to the third-place match.
Also for the Trojans, Isaiah Maldonado placed fourth at 133 pounds, Alejandro Rodriguez was fifth at 125 pounds, Mustafa Hadi was fifth at 197 pounds and Grant Henderson was fifth at 285 poounds.
NIACC will compete in the NJCAA Division I national championships March 6-7 in Council Bluffs.
