NIACC men to compete in 8 events at nationals
TOPEKA, Kan. - The NIACC men's track and field team will compete in eight events at the NJCAA Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at Washburn University.
NIACC's Gavin Grunhovd will compete in the mile run, the 3,000-meter run and the 5,000-meter run.
Grunhovd owns the school indoor record in the mile in a time of 4 minutes, 15.17 seconds on Feb. 21 and the 3,000 in a time of 8:32.42 on Feb. 7. His time of 14:53.05 ranks second on the school's indoor 5,000 list.
Grunhovd was second in the mile at the NJCAA Region 11 championships with his school record time of 4:15.17.
The 5,000-meter run is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Friday while the mile is set for 2:20 p.m. on Saturday and the 3,000 is 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.
NIACC's Xavier Codling will compete in the 200-meter dash and long jump.
Codling won the 200 at the regional meet in a time of 22.11 and won the long jump with a leap of 7.19 meters (23 feet, 7 1/4 inches), which ranks second on the school's all-time indoor list.
Codling's personal best time in the 200 is 21.81, which ranks second on the school's all-time indoor list.
The 200-meter dash prelims are 6:55 p.m. on Friday. The long jump competition is set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
NIACC's Kahuan Harris will compete in the long jump, Colin Rasch will compete in the weight throw and Marshall Zeien will compete in the shot put.
Harris placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.71 meters (22-0 1/4). Harris' personal best in the long jump is 7.02 meters (23-0 1/2), which ranks fourth on the school's all-time indoor list.
Rasch placed third in the weight throw at the regional meet with a toss of 15.91 meters (52-2 1/2), which ranks second on the school's all-time list.
The weight throw at the national meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
Zeien was 12th at the regional meet in the shot put with a toss of 12.65 meters (41-6). Zeien's personal best toss in the shot put is 41-8 3/4, which ranks eighth on the school's all-time indoor shot put list.
The shot put competition is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
