NIACC sends 8 to district semifinals
CENTERVILLE - The No. 7 NIACC wrestling team is competing Sunday at the NJCAA North Central District Tournament at Lakeview Elementary.
NIACC's Cruz Aguilar (125), Clarence Lee-Green (133) and Deville Dentis (149), Ein Carlos (174) and Chase McCleish (184) opened the tournament with first-round wins.
Aguilar (7-4) advanced to the semifinals with a 34-second pin of Ellsworth's Kaden Karns and Lee-Green (10-5) took an 11-2 major decision from Iowa Central's Davian Gowens.
Dentis (9-3) took an 8-0 major decision from Iowa Western's Kruise Kiburz in his opening match at 149 pounds. At 174, Carlos (4-1) pinned Ellsworth's Nolan Craine in 2:23.
At 184 pounds, McCleish (14-4) took an 8-2 decision from Iowa Lakes' John Colbourne.
Aguilar now faces Iowa Western's fourth-ranked Jakason Burks in the semifinals at 125 pounds. Burkes won 16-7 earlier this season in a dual meet.
Lee-Green, who is ranked ninth, takes on Iowa Western's unranked Camden Russell in the 133-pound semifinals. Russell edged Lee-Green 12-10 in the dual meet this season.
Dentis, who is ranked fifth, faces Ellsworth's fourth-ranked Nathan Lendt in the 149-pound semifinals. Lendt stopped Dentis 7-4 in a dual meet this season.
Carlos, who is unranked, faces Iowa Central's top-ranked Jose Rodriguez in his 174-pound semifinal match. The two wrestlers did not meet in the dual meet this season.
In the 184-pound semifinals, McCleish will face Iowa Western's third-ranked Josh McFarland, who stopped McCleish 9-5 earlier this season.
NIACC's Quentrevion Campbell (141), Christian Minto (165) and Jose Valdez (197) earned top seeds in their respective weight classes and received first-round byes.
In the semifinals, Campbell (8-1) will face Iowa Central's Darnai Heard, Minto (9-0) takes on Iowa Lakes' Dominique Johnson and Valdez (10-0) wrestles Iowa Western's Michael Aguirre.
Cambell and Minto did not face their semifinal opponent this season in dual meets. Valdez took a 14-5 major decision from Aguirre.
NIACC's Josh Barretta (157) and Jaylin Smith (285), who both dropped first-round matches, will compete in the consolation bracket.
Indian Hills is the host school for the district tournament.
