NIACC moves 7 wrestlers to quarterfinals
COUNCIL BLUFFS - The No. 7 NIACC wrestling team was a perfect seven for seven Friday in the second round at the NJCAA national wrestling tournament at the Mid-America Center.
NIACC picked up technical falls from Cruz Aguilar (125), Quentrevion Campbell (141), Christian Minto (165) and Jose Valdez (197) in the second round. The Trojans also received a major decision from Ein Carlos (174) and decisions from Clarence Lee-Green (133) and Deville Dentis (149).
NIACC's Josh Barretta stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a techical fall at 157 pounds.\
Heading into Friday's quarterfinals, NIACC is in sixth place with 35.5 points. Northeast Oklahoma A&M is in first with 39.5 points and Iowa Central is in second with 39 points.
In his second-round match at 125 pounds, Aguilar gained a 17-2 technical fall over Southwestern Oregon's Joey Thompson. Aguilar opened his tournament with a fall over Cowley's Robbie Rosser.
In his second-round match at 141 pounds, Campbell picked up a 16-0 technical fall over Harper's Martrece Smith. Campbell received a bye in the first round.
At 165 pounds, Minto, who is the defending national champion, picked up an 18-3 technical fall over Northeastern's Cael Smith. Minto, who is ranked No. 1, received medical forfeit (no match) in the first round,
At 197 pounds, Valdez, who is ranked second, dominated Nassau's Isaiah Lee for a 16-1 technical fall.
At 174 pounds, Carlos, who upset Northwest Kansas Tech's sixth-ranked Jameel Coles in overtime in the first round, advanced to Friday night's quarterfinals with a 12-4 major decision over Henry Ford's Vaughn Petty.
At 149 pounds, Dentis, who is ranked fifth, topped North Idaho's Brandon Bollinger, 4-3.
At 133 pounds, Lee-Green, who is ranked ninth, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win over Otero's Marquis Kemp. Lee-Green led the match 3-0 when Kemp was forced to retire due to an elbow injury.
NIACC's Chase McCleish stayed alive in the consolation bracket at 184 pounds with a 4:53 pin over Labette's Darin Neal.
The quarterfinals matches are set for 6:15 p.m. Friday.
