Topp leads Trojans at Mustang Fall Invite
MARION - Freshman Emma Topp shot a 91 to lead the NIACC women's golf team Saturday on day one of the Mount Mercy Mustang Fall Invite at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
NIACC sits in 12th place heading into Sunday's final round with a team score of 378. Indian Hills is the 18-hole leader with a 314 and Morningside is in second with a 319.
"The course got the better of us (Saturday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "Hunters Ridge is a tough golf course and it was playing tough (Saturday) with difficult pin placements and quick greens.
"This is a tournament with a strong field and this is a great learning experience for us."
Topp followed up her 88 on Thursday at the Hawkeye CC Fall Shootout in Waterloo with a 91 on Saturday to pace the Trojans.
"Emma Topp played well (Saturday)," Frenz said. "She had a very difficult hole (No. 2) and did an outstanding job of hanging in there and finishing the front nine with a 45."
Also for the Trojans Saturday, sophomore Addy Boell shot 92, freshman Avery Knutsen shot 95, sophomore Danielle Randick shot 100 and freshman Audrey Overgaard shot 100.
"Addy Boell also hit the ball pretty well overall but her putter let her down," Frenz said. "We're still adjusting to the college-type courses, but I'm sure we'll come out with a lot of confidence (Sunday) morning."
Team standings - Indian Hills 314, Morningside 319, Mount Mercy 323, Doane 329, Baker 334, Clarke 346, Augustana (Ill.) 346, UW-Platteville 351, Park (Mo.) 351, Mount Mercy B 361, St. Ambrose 368, NIACC 378, Doane B 379, Iowa Lakes 418.
