Trojans sit in 2nd at North Plains District tourney
ANKENY - The NIACC women's golf team is in second place after day one at the NJCAA North Plains District Championships Monday at Otter Creek Golf Course.
NIACC shot a first-day score of 341. DMACC is the first day leader with a round of 328.
Iowa Central is in in third at 350 and Southeast CC is in fourth with a 387.
The top two teams advance to the NJCAA Division II national championships May 12-15 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
"After day one, we're in position to make a run to the national tournament," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "but we still have a lot of work to do."
NIACC sophomore Meghan DeLong shot 77, which is tied for second in the individual medalist competition. Sophomore Addy Boell was next in line for the Trojans with a round of 87, which is tied for ninth in the individual medalist competition.
The 77 by DeLong is the lowest round at a regional/district tournament in the Frenz era. The previous low round was a 78 by the Trojans' Mikayla Smith on day 2 of the regional tournament in 2013.
"We had strong rounds (Monday) from Meghan DeLong and Addy Boell," Frenz said. "Meghan is sitting in good position to challenge for the individual championship, but we're not counting outselves out from challenging for the team championship either.
"We need to follow up with a solid day (Tuesday)."
DMACC's Hannah Kenkel is the individual leader with a low round of 76. DeLong and the Bears' Megan Wilde are tied for second with rounds of 77.
Also for the Trojans on Monday, freshman Avery Knutsen shot 88, Audrey Overgaard shot 89 and sophomore Kenedee Frayne shot 93.
Round two of the district championship is set for Tuesday. The first tee time for the Trojans will be at 10:50 a.m.
First-day team standings - DMACC 328, NIACC 341, Iowa Central 350, Southeast CC 387, Hawkeye CC 406.
