NIACC's DeLong claims medalist honors
MASON CITY - NIACC sophomore Meghan DeLong earned individual medalist honors Friday at the NIACC Spring Invitational at Highland Park Golf Course.
DeLong, who prepped at Clear Lake, won the Trojans' home invitational with a low round of 78. Iowa Central's Syeda Laiba Shah placed second with a 79.
"It was great to have Meghan DeLong back in the lineup," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "as she had to miss several tournaments because of class conflicts with nursing and she secured another individual victory."
It was DeLong's ninth career victory as she won eight times during her freshman season.
NIACC placed second in the four-team invitational with a team score of 334. DMACC was the team champion with a 325.
"It was a great team effort (Friday)," Frenz said, "even though we came up a little bit short of the victory. We had our best team score of the spring season."
Also for NIACC on Friday, freshman Audrey Overgaard shot 83, which tied for sixth in the individual medalist competition."Audrey Overgaard is also in the nursing program and hasn't been able to come to too many tournaments so (Friday) was the first time we've had the full team together this year," Frenz said, "because of that, all of the other players have really stepped up in their abscence and played very well and gave us a balanced attack one through five."
NIACC sophomore Kenedee Frayne shot 85, freshman Avery Knutsen shot 88 and sophomore Addy Boell shot 89.
"Avery Knutsen, Kenedee Frayne and Addy Boell all kept it in the 80s (Friday) to give us a chance to win," Frenz said, "but we know we still have work to do."
NIACc's B team shot a team total of 377. Sophomore Danielle Randick shot 89, freshman Emma Topp shot 91, sophomore Ashlyn Berven shot 98 and sophomore Kaiya Holten shot 99.
"It was also tough to see three sophomores seasons come to an end," Frenz said. "They played well (Friday), too."
NIACC plays in the NJCAA North Plains District Championship Monday and Tuesday at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
"(Friday) was a good day for the Trojans, but we're looking for two great days Monday and Tuesday at Otter Creek," Frenz said.
