NIACC women claim Red Tail Fall Invitational
DIKE - The NIACC women's golf team claimed the Hawkeye CC Red Tail Fall Invitational on Friday giving its coach Chris Frenz a birthday present.
NIACC shot a fall season low 350 to earn its second team title of the fall season at the At Fox Ridge Golf Course. DMACC was second at 352 and Waldorf University was third at 354.
"They said they were going to give me a win for my birthday," Frenz said, "and they came through."
NIACC's previous best round this fall was a 366 where the Lady Trojans won the Iowa Central Fall Kickoff Tournament on Sept. 15.
NIACC was led by Hailey Panos with a career-best 43-39 - 82. Panos' previous best round this fall was an 86 at the NIACC Fall Invitational on Sept. 18.
"Just a great effort (Friday) from Hailey Panos," Frenz said. "She was striking the ball well off the tee and she chipped in for birdie.
"She's been so close to breaking through the past week or two, so it was nice to see her hard work paying off."
Also for the Lady Trojans, Thea Lunning shot 44-41 - 85, Ashley Voves shot 46-42 - 88, Abby Murray shot 47-48 - 95 and Jenna Paulus shot 57-59 - 116.
"Teamwise, this was our best of the year and it shows we can compete with one of the best teams in our conference in DMACC," Frenz said. "Thea, Ashley and Abby were consistent (Friday), which is what they need. It was Jenna's first tournament in two years and after she got the jitters out she settled down and played OK."
The NIACC women wrap up their fall season at the DMACC Fall Invitational at the Ames Country Club.
