NIACC's Voves wins NIACC Spring Invite
MASON CITY - A career best round by NIACC's Ashley Voves earned her individual medalist honors at Thursday's NIACC Spring Invitational at the Mason City Country Club.
Voves shot an 80 to claim her first collegiate individual medalist title. DMACC's Krista Swenson and Aubrey Duncan tied for second with a pair of 82 and NIACC's Thea Lunning was fourth with a round of 82.
"This was a very good day for us shooting 346," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and Ashley Voves coming away with the win.
"Ashley has been fighting herself this season and it's awesome to see it all click (Thursday). It proves to her that she has what it takes. She worked really hard on her short game this week, which has been killing her."
Voves' previous career best round was an 86 at the Iowa Wesleyan Tiger Classic on Oct. 1, 2019.
DMACC was the team champion with a 341. NIACC was second with a 346 and Waldorf University was third with a 357.
Lunning shot her second best round of the spring season with an 82. Also for the Lady Trojans, Hailey Panos shot 91, Abby Murray shot a spring-season best 93 and Jenna Paulus shot a career-best 97.
"We received another sold effort out of Thea Lunning," Frenz said. "Abby Murray had one of her best rounds and it's just great to see her playing well after her shoulder issues.
"Jenna Paulus had her best day as a Trojan and even though I know Hailey wasn't pleased with her round, I know she'll bounce back."
NIACC returns to action Friday at the Hawkeye CC Spring Invitational.
