NIACC's Lunning shoots 3rd day 89 at nationals
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - NIACC sophomore Thea Lunning shot an 89 in the third round Wednesday at the NJCAA Division I national championships on the Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club course.
Lunning, who is from Mason City, improved her score for the second consecutive day. She recorded a 91 on Monday and a 90 on Tuesday. Lunning currently sits in 60th place with a 91-90-89 - 270.
On Wednesday, Lunning shot a 40 on the back nine (her first nine) and recorded a 49 on the front nine for her round of 89.
The round of 89 is the best round at the national tournament for a Lady Trojan since Savannah Lentz fired a 85 on day four of the 2015 national tournament. The 89 is tied for the 10th best round for a NIACC women's golfer in the Chris Frenz era.
On the back nine, Lunning recorded birdies on holes No. 13 (140-yard par 3) and No. 15 (348-yard par 4), her first two birdies of the national tournament. She also recorded pars on holes No. 10 (490-yard par 5), No. 11 (360-yard par 4) and No. 18 (330-yard par 4).
On the front nine, Lunning recorded pars on holes No. 1 (492-yard par 5) and No. 4 (135-yard par 3).
The final round of the 72-hole tournament is set for Thursday.
