NIACC's Lunning earns medalist honors at Hawkeye CC Invite
WATERLOO - Another day, another individual medalist for the NIACC women's golf team.
This time it was NIACC sophomore Thea Lunning, who claimed individual medalist honors Friday at the Hawkeye CC Spring Invitational at the Irv Warren Golf Course with a season-best round of 80. NIACC's Ashley Voves was the runner-up medalist with a round of 86.
"I'm really excited for Thea to get the win (Friday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and for Ashley to follow up her round (Monday) with a solid second-place finish.
"Thea has been so consistent this spring and finally that consistency paid off with a victory."
It was the second time in Lunning's collegiate career that she has claimed individual medalist honors. She also won the Iowa Lakes Fall Invitational on Sept. 22, 2020.
On Thursday, Voves was the individual medalist at the NIACC Spring Invitational with a career best round of 80 at the Mason City Country Club.
Also for the Lady Trojans, who placed second with a 367, Abby Murray shot 96, Hailey Panos shot 104 and Jenna Paulus shot 108.
"Hailey, Abby and Jenna were very disappointed with their play," Frenz said, "but I know they can put it together.
"We'll get after it on Sunday at Hunters Ridge in preparation for the women's regional tournament next weekend at Otter Creek."
DMACC was the team champion Friday with a 353 and Clarke University was third with a 427.
NIACC returns to action Sunday at the Mount Mercy Mustang Spring Invitational.
