Kipkemboi finishes seventh in 5,000
LEVELLAND, Texas - NIACC freshman Melvin Kipkemboi placed 7th in the 5,000 Thursday at the NJCAA Division I national track and field championships.
Kipkemboi finished in a time of 15 minutes, 27.03 seconds, which is the third-best time on NIACC's all-time outdoor list. Jordan Anderson is the only runner to break the 15-minute mark during the outdoor season at NIACC, running 14:36.89 at the Penn Relays in 2008. Jacob Day is second on the list with his time of 15:25.77 during the 2016 season.
Northwest Kansas took home the top two spots in the 5,000 as Vincent Nchogu won in 14:44.99, followed by Oliver Kiptoo in 15:02.49.
Thursday's run was also the first time Kipkemboi competed in the 5,000 during the outdoor season as he qualified for the national meet with his time of 14:59.88 at the NJCAA indoor championships in March.
Also for the Trojans, Kameron Glasper was 15th in the discus with a throw of 139 feet, 2 inches (42.43 meters).
