NIACC's Kipkemboi wins 5K at regionals
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - NIACC freshman Melvin Kipkemboi won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15 minutes, 25.92 seconds at the NJCAA Region XI championships Saturday on the Central Missouri State campus.
Kipkemboi's time qualified him for the NJCAA Division I national meet and was the third fastest 5K time in school history..
Also in the 5K, NIACC's Vicente Correia placed third in a time of 15:58.25 and Stephen Ringo was ninth (16:59.11).
NIACC placed fifth at the regional meet with 32 points. Iowa Central was the team champion with 185 points.
NIACC placed second in the distance medley relay in a time of 10:34.44, which qualified the foursome of Correia, Titus Jackson, Pudens Kipkosgei and Kipkemboi for the national meet.
Kiplosgei also qualified for nationals in the 1,000-meter run with his fifth place finish in 2:36.27, which is the sixth fastest 1K time in school history. Also in the 1K, Janvier Irakoze was eighth (2:42.13).
In the high jump, NIACC's Marcel Smith placed fourth with a jump of 1.85 meters (6-0 3/4).
NIACC placed fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:39.17 running Walker Sobolik, Kiplosgei, Tinashe Chigudu and Jackson. The Trojans also were fifth in the 4x400 (3:46.02) running Maxwell Deeter, Irakoze, Richard Marcoux and Bryden Juelsgaard.
Marcoux placed eighth in the mile (4:41.26).
In the shot put, Kameron Glasper placed ninth with a toss of 11.88 meters (38-11 3/4).
In the weight throw, Glasper was 10th with a toss of 11.93 meters (39-1 3/4) and Randry Mugisha was 11th with a throw of 11.24 meters (36-10 1/2).
In the 400, NIACC's Gavin Reicks was 10th (52.85) and John Hunt was was 17th (55.80).
In the 600, Hunt was 11th in a time of 1:28.50. Deeter was 18th (1:34.93) and Juelsgaard was 20th (1:37.11).
In the 200, Chigudu was 14th in a time of 22.78. Jackson was 22nd (23.49) and Reicks was 30th (24.89).
In the long jump, NIACC's Angleo Jackson was 15th with a leap of 5.55 meters (18-2 1/2).
In the 60 prelims, Chigudu ran 6.93 and did not make the finals.
The NJCAA Division I national meet is set for March 4-6 at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.
