Trojans in second after first day at BVU Fall Invite
STORM LAKE - The NIACC men's golf team is in second place Saturday after the first day of the Buena Vista University Fall Invitational at the Lake Creek Country Club.
NIACC sits in second place with a team total of 302. Host Buena Vista leads the two-day tournament with a 299 and Simpson College is in third with an opening round of 306.
"The guys reall put together a nice round (Saturday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and put is in position to win the tournament (Sunday) with a good day.
"I'm really pleased with how the guys handled themselves (Saturday). We had a couple of things not go our way throughout the course of the round, but we had a lot of birdies and never panicked."
NIACC freshman Heath Voigt is the individual leader after 18 holes with a round of 72. Buena Vista's Mason Laven and Matthew Turpen and Wartburg's Andrew Kimball are tied for second with rounds of 73.
"Heath Voigt has such a great mindset for a freshman," Frenz said, "and it's awesome to see him get rewarded for his efforts (Saturday)."
NIACC sophomores Ashtin Willms and Garrett Ham both shot 76 on Saturday.
"Garrett Ham was his normal steady self and I expect him to really get after it (Sunday) with how his round ended (Saturday)," Frenz said. "It was great to see Ashtin Willms put together a complete round (Saturday)."
Also for the Trojans Saturday, freshman Eli Anderson shot 78 and freshman Hudson Kroymann shot 79.
"Eli Anderson bounced back from a tough penalty on his 10th hole of the day," Frenz said. "Hudson Kroymann has been solid this fall too and even though we didn't count his score (Saturday), I know he'll come focused and ready to score (Sunday)."
