Trojans place 2nd at own invite
MASON CITY - The NIACC men's golf team placed second at the NIACC Spring Invitational on Friday with a team score of 286 at Highland Park Golf Course.
Iowa Central was the team champion with a low round of 278.
"The guys continued to play well (Friday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "as we march to the regional tournament May 3-5.
"A team score of 2-under 286 is solid, but Iowa Central was just a bit better (Friday). We know we can compete with the best teams in the ICCAC and I think we are headed in the right direction as we go to regionals."
Sophomore Garrett Ham led the Trojans matched his career best round with a 69 on Friday, which was third in the individual medalist competition. Iowa Central's Eric Zuniga and Francis Lockwood tied for medalist honors with rounds of 66.
"Garrett Ham was exceptional (Friday) shooting a 3-under 69 and Heath Voigt threw in a solid 1-under 71," Frenz said. "Those two have led the way all year long and (Friday)."
Also for the Trojans, sophomore Ashtin Willms shot 72, freshman Hudson Kroymann shot 74 and freshman Austin Stene shot 78.
"I love the makeup of this team from my No. 1 to my No. 13 guy," Frenz said. "They have pushed each other brutally hard both in the fall and spring season.
"It's been a blast to see these guys succeed and we're very aware of what we need to do to get it done at regionals."
The NIACC B team shot a team score of 308. Sophomore Ian Roske shot 73, sophomore Drew DeGabriele shot 78, sophomore Kyler Glenn shot 78 and sophomore Gavin Anderson shot 79.
Also, Cade Dillavou shot 75, Nolan Reser shot 75 and Noah Honn shot 85.
"I had a great group of sophomores and I'll miss them next year," Frenz said, "but they're all going to be very successful people and that's really what this is all about."
NiACC plays in the NJCAA North Central District Championship on May 3-5 in Sioux City.
