Trojans in 9th place after first day at Eagle Classic
AMANA - The NIACC men's golf team sits in ninth place Monday after the first day at the Kirkwood Eagle Fall Classic at the Amana Colonies Golf Club.
NIACC shot an opening-round 324. Host Kirkwood is the first-day leader with an opening round 293 and Mount Mercy University is in second place with a 298.
"It was a difficult day scoring for us (Monday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "We had too many big numbers overall on the day and we did our best to recover, but just couldn't get things going.
"This course is a tough one to get a bunch of birdies so you really have to keep your head in the game and realize that par is a good score."
Freshman Eli Anderson led the Trojans with a 79. Freshman Heath Voigt shot 81, freshman Hudson Kroymann shot 82, sophomore Ashtin Willms shot 82 and sophomore Garrett Ham shot 83.
The final round of the tournament is set for Tuesday.
