NIACC baseball team splits with Kirkwood, takes series 3-1

CEDAR RAPIDS — The No. 13 NIACC baseball team is back in the conference race after taking 3 of 4 games from Kirkwood in an ICCAC series.
The Trojans and Eagles split Monday to wrap up the four-game set with NIACC winning the opener 6-1 before Kirkwood took the second game 9-5. NIACC won the opening two games of the series Saturday.
NIACC's Tony Grabowske pitched a three-hitter in the opener, striking out nine.
Newman Catholic product Jack Fitzgerald had a solid day at the plate for Kirkwood, doubling in each game and recording a pair of hits in the opener.
Troy Bullingham and Brandon Michie each homered in the first game for the Trojans.
NIACC (21-9, 8-4) plays at Century College on Wednesday. The Trojans trail Iowa Central, Southeastern and Kirkwood by a game in the conference standings.
