3 NIACC women players selected first-team all-region
MASON CITY - The NIACC women's basketball team landed three players on the all-NJCAA Region XI first team.
NIACC sophomores Savannah Lentz, Trudy Peterson and Sammie Sproul were selected to the all-region first team. Sophomores Diamond Miller and Anna Eckert were second-team selections for the regional champion Lady Trojans.
Lentz, who was a second-team selection a year ago, averages 14.0 points per game and has connected on 80 3-point goals this season. Lentz, who was an NJCAA Region XI all-tournament selection, is the school's career 3-point leader with 164.
Peterson, a third-team selection as a freshman, averages 13.0 points per game and has made 89 3-point goals this season. She scored a school-record 51 points in a game this season against Kennedy King College.
Sproul, who was a NJCAA Region XI all-tournament selection, averages 11.8 points per game.
Sproul has 117 assists and 107 steals and is the third player in women's history with at least 100 assists and 100 steals in a single season. The two others to reach that milestone were Marla Shuey in the 1974-75 season and Casey Spree in the 1999-2000 season.
Eckert, the regional tournament MVP, averages 8.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. Eckert, a third-team pick as a freshman, scored 23 points with 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in the regional tournament title game against DMACC.
Miller, a third-team selection as a freshman, averages 8.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
NIACC (22-11) advanced to the NJCAA Division II national tournament with a 83-80 victory over DMACC last Saturday. The pairings for the March 15-19 national tournament in Overland Park, Kan., will be released Tuesday morning.
