No. 13 NIACC women open tourney with 77-45 victory
MASON CITY - Sophomores Savannah Lentz and Trudy Peterson both scored 15 points to lead the No. 13 NIACC women to a 77-45 victory over Southwestern in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XI women's basketball tournament Tuesday night in the NIACC gym.
NIACC jumped out to a 17-0 lead, led 30-20 at the half and cruised to an opening round victory in the regional tournament for the third straight season.
NIACC (20-10) hosts Iowa Central in the regional semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Iowa Central topped Southeastern 64-59 in its regional opener Tuesday.
NIACC and Iowa Central split its two regular season contests. The Tritons won 76-52 and the Lady Trojans won 85-66.
It is the third straight season that the NIACC women have won at least 20 games.
NIACC, which has won eight straight contests, also received 10 points from Anna Eckert and nine points from Sammie Sproul, who also had five rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Peterson scored her 15 points on five three-point goals. Peterson now has 87 3-point goals this season, which ranks second on NIACC's single-season list.
Southwestern (10-18) was led by Olivia Reifert with 11 points and 13 rebounds. LaStella Slack also reached double figures for the Spartans with 10 points.
Lady Trojan tidbits: Lentz is NIACC's career leader with 157 career 3-point goals ... Peterson ranks second in career field goals with 129 ... Lentz has 73 3-point goals this season, which ranks seventh on the school's single-season list ... Lentz connected on 84 3-point goals as a freshman (tied for 3rd on school's single-season list) ...
