No. 9 NIACC knocks off No. 2 Illinois Central, 84-76
MASON CITY - The No. 9 NIACC women's basketball team knocked off No. 2 Illinois Central 84-76 in overtime Friday night at the Konigsmark Klassic.
Sophomore Trudy Peterson connected on a deep 3-point goal from the right wing with about four seconds remaining in regulation to tie the contest at 72-72 to force overtime.
NIACC outscored Illinois Central 12-4 in the extra session to improved its record to 3-0.
NIACC led 51-39 after three quarters but Illinois Central got back into the contest with its press. Illinois Central took a 72-69 lead with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Sophomore Sam Adamich scored a career-high 20 points to lead four Lady Trojans in double figures. Sophomore Savannah Lentz and freshman Courtney Larson both scored 16 points and Peterson scored 10 points.
Adamich's previous career high was 16 points on Dec. 10, 2014 against Riverland CC. The 16 points by Larson was a career-high.
Larson led the Lady Trojans with a career-best nine rebounds and Sammie Sproul had eight rebounds. Lentz collected a career-best six steals.
Lentz connected on four 3-point goals to increase her career total to 97, which is tied for sixth on the school's all-time list. Amy Boley (2008-10) and Kadejah Young (2012-14) both drained 97 3-point goals in their career.
NIACC returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday against Lake Land College in the second day of the Konigsmark Klassic.
Notes: The overtime game against Illinois Central was first OT contest in NIACC coach Todd Ciochetto era ... Before Friday, the last OT game played by the NIACC women was a 93-86 overtime win over DMACC in the NJCAA Region XI semifinals on March 7, 2014 in Fort Dodge.
