OXFORD, Ala. - The No. 17 (NJCAA Division II) NIACC softball team dropped a pair of games Thursday to start its 2026 season at the Choccolocco Jam.
No. 5 (NJCAA Division I) Wallace State CC-Hanceville nipped the Trojans 3-2 and No. 12 (NJCAA Division I) Chattanooga State CC edged the Trojans 7-6.
In the opener against Wallace State CC-Hanceville, the Lady Lions (9-2) plated two runs in the third inning and pushed across a single run in the sixth frame.
NIACC scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Mya Bunkers and Aubrey Chapman each drove in a run for the Trojans.
NIACC's Makayla Wirkus and Bunkers both had two hits. Bunkers had the lone extra base hit in the contest with her third career triple.
Freshman left-hander Chloe Thurlby took the loss in the circle for the Trojans. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of work.
In the game against Chattanooga State CC, the Tigers (8-4) won the contest by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. NIACC had tied the contest at 6-6 with a single run in its half of the seventh frame.
The Tigers also scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second inning and three runs in the third frame. NIACC plated three runs in the first inning and added two runs in the fourth frame.
Bunkers drove in two runs and the Trojans also received RBIs from Katie Riesselman, Ally Wall and Emma Wall. Riesselman was 2 for 4 with two doubles.
Bunkers and Ally Wall also each doubled for the Trojans.
NIACC returns to action Friday at the Choccolocco Jam. The Trojans face Northeast Mississippi CC at 2 p.m. and No. 19 (NJCAA Division I) Southern Union State CC at 4 p.m.
