COLUMBUS, Neb. - The No. 16 NIACC softball team swept an ICCAC doubleheader Saturday from Central CC-Columbus.
NIACC (17-10 overall, 2-2 in the ICCAC) won the opener 11-2 in five innings. The Trojans completed the league sweep with a 9-6 win in the second game.
In the first game, freshman left-hander Chloe Thurlby (10-6) tossed a complete-game one-hitter with a career-best 13 strikeouts in five innings of work. Thurlby's previous high strikeout total was 10 in a 10-1 win over Metropolitan CC on Feb. 28.
Thurlby has 106 strikeouts and 23 walks with a 2.57 earned run average in 92 2/3 innings of work. The 106 strikeouts is tied for 15th on the school's all-time single season strikout list.
NIACC scored a single run in the first inning and plated five runs in the second and fifth innings.
NIACC's Emma Wall was 2 for 3, including a home run, with four RBIs. She also scored two runs. It was Wall's fourth home run of the season.
NIACC's Aubrey Chapman was 2 for 4, including a triple, with two RBIs. The Trojans' JoAnna Wallace was 2 for 2, including a double, with three RBIs and also scored a run.
NIACC's Mya Bunkers was 2 for 3, including a double, and scored two runs. The Trojans' Kennedi McGarvey was 2 for 3 and scored two runs.
In the second game, NIACC pounded out 14 hits to scored its nine runs. The Trojans scored four runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning, three runs in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth frame.
NIACC's Makayla Wirkus and Chapman both collected three hits. Ally Wall, Bunkers and Wallace all had two hits.
NIACC's Addie Rhoades hit her third home run of the season.
Ally Wall (2-1) gained the win in the circle for the Trojans. She allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks in three innings of work.
NIACC returns to action Sunday in an ICCAC doubleheader at Northeast CC in Norfolk, Neb. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
