Trojans move to regional title game
MASON CITY - For the third straight season, the NIACC women's basketball team has advanced to the regional title game.
Second-seed NIACC stopped seventh-seed Iowa Western 74-59 Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 11-B tournament in the NIACC gym. Sophomore guard Reggi Spotts led the Trojans with 30 points, which matched her career high.
NIACC (26-3) faces sixth-seed Northeast CC (19-10) in the regional title game at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in the NIACc gym. Northeast CC upset third-seed Iowa Lakes 66-56 in its first-round regional game on Saturday.
The 26 wins by NIACC is the most by the Trojans since they were 32-1 in the 2019-20 season.
NIACC trailed 18-15 after the first quarter but outscored the Reivers 29-12 in the second quarter to take a 44-30 lead at the half. The Trojans outscored the Reivers 30-29 in the second 20 minutes to claim the 15-point victory.
It was the third win this season for NIACC over Iowa Western. The Trojans also topped the Reivers 66-58 in Council Bluffs on Dec. 6 and 68-60 on Feb. 7 in Mason City.
Also for the Trojans on Saturday, freshman Zaria Falls scored 11 points and Peyton Meincke and Taylor Hemann both scored nine points. Freshman Ciara Seifert scored seven points and led the Trojans with seven rebounds.
Spotts grabbed four rebounds and also had four assists. Falls had four rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and one steal.
Iowa Western (15-14) was led by Sydney Donaldson with 22 points. Aniyah Howard was also in double figures for the Reivers with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
In the last two regional title games for NIACC, the Trojans dropped a 111-89 decision to Iowa Western in 2024 and the Trojans claimed the regional title with a 72-59 victory over Ellsworth in 2025.
Monday's home regional title game will be the first regional title game in the NIACC gym since the Trojans claimed the regional title with a 95-73 win over Kirkwood in 2020.
NIACC owns two wins over Northeast CC in the 2025-26 season. The Trojans won 71-64 on Jan. 17 in Mason City and 72-66 on Jan. 31 in Norfolk, Neb.
